You sure see some funny wounds

in combat. I remember this one guy

lying there with a bullet hole

right through his helmet, and blood

pouring out. We left him for dead,

and went on gathering the wounded,

until he cried out.

On closer look, the bullet had

ripped through the helmet front,

ricocheted off the strap clamp or

something, and buzzed around the

curve of his helmet, peeling off

flesh in a ring around his head.

I remember this one officer.

He gave me royal hell for making

friends with one of the natives.

He made me stand at attention the

whole time, and wouldn’t let me

say a thing in my own defense. I

never got over my dislike for him.

Six months later, one night

after our outfit had been ambushed

and shot up, I got to go with the

wounded back to the hospital. It

had been just an old vacant building.

It was raining and the hospital

was pretty full. So I slept in the

hallway next to some dead soldiers

wrapped in plastic bags. There was

a faint light from the operating

room, and I noticed the dog tags on

one of the bags. It was that of the

officer who’d chewed me out.
